Open-Source Software
Vexaro software is proprietary, and it contains third-party components that their authors license under their own open-source terms. This page lists those components for the software we distribute, explains which terms govern them, and tells you where to get the source code that some of those licences require us to make available.
1. Scope
This page applies to the software that Vexaro, LLC, a limited liability company organized under the laws of the State of Delaware, USA (“Vexaro”, “we”), distributes for installation on your devices: Vexaro Desk for Windows, meaning the desktop application, the Vexaro host service with its session helpers, and the updater. The web applications we operate as part of the Service run on our infrastructure and are not distributed to you, so they are not covered here.
The Vexaro software itself is proprietary and is licensed to you under §7 of the Terms of Service. It is not open-source or source-available software.
Every build carries its own complete list of third-party components, with their licence texts and copyright notices: in the application under Settings > About > Third-party software notices (installed and portable copies alike), and, when Vexaro Desk is installed, as THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt in the installation folder. Component versions change from build to build; where this page and the notices shipped with a build differ, the notices shipped with that build are authoritative for it.
2. Your rights under third-party licences
As stated in §7.6 of the Terms of Service, the licence of each third-party component governs your use of that component, and nothing in the Terms, including the restrictions in §7.2 and §7.3, limits rights that licence grants you. For components under the GNU Lesser General Public License, such as FFmpeg, you may modify the component and reverse-engineer as needed to debug such modifications.
§7.6 does not apply to the Microsoft components described in Section 3.4, which remain subject to §7.2 and §7.3.
3. Components in Vexaro Desk for Windows
This section describes Vexaro Desk for Windows version 0.2.13 and later. Earlier versions are covered in Section 4.
3.1 FFmpeg
Vexaro Desk uses FFmpeg to encode video with the graphics card and to write session recordings. FFmpeg is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1 or later (LGPL-2.1-or-later). FFmpeg is a trademark of Fabrice Bellard, originator of the FFmpeg project.
- How it is included. FFmpeg is shipped as a separate program,
ffmpeg.exe, that Vexaro Desk starts as a child process and exchanges data with through pipes. It is built by Vexaro from unmodified FFmpeg source without the configuration options that change its licence (--enable-gpl,--enable-version3) or make it non-redistributable (--enable-nonfree). In an installed copy its licence text (LICENSE.txt) and build record (BUILDINFO.txt, with the configuration used) are placed next to it; the portable version downloadsffmpeg.exein the background after it starts, and in every copy the licence is shown in the in-app notices. - What the build also contains. The NVIDIA codec headers (nv-codec-headers), the AMD Advanced Media Framework headers and the Intel oneVPL dispatcher (libvpl), each under the MIT licence, and the MinGW-w64 and GCC runtime libraries of the compiler toolchain (the latter under the GCC Runtime Library Exception).
- Using your own FFmpeg. You may run Vexaro Desk with a different or modified FFmpeg build:
- In an installed copy, replace
ffmpeg\ffmpeg.exein the Vexaro installation folder with your build. The folder is writable only by administrators and the system, so this takes administrator rights. It is the copy every Vexaro process uses, including the Vexaro host service and its session helpers. - For the portable version, put your
ffmpeg.exenext to the Vexaro program file. - The Vexaro host service and its session helpers run under the Windows system account. For their security they take FFmpeg only from the installation folder, or from the copy Vexaro downloads and verifies itself. They do not read the
VEXARO_FFMPEGenvironment variable, thePATH, or other folders. - Vexaro Desk running under your own user account also accepts the
VEXARO_FFMPEGenvironment variable, set to the full path of yourffmpeg.exe.
- In an installed copy, replace
- Source code. See Section 3.3.

The notices shipped with each build name every component individually, with its version, licence text and copyright notice.
3.3 Source code we make available
We publish source archives for the two components that we build or modify ourselves and whose licences require their source code to be made available: FFmpeg (LGPL-2.1-or-later, Section 3.1) and our modified copy of env-libvpx-sys (MPL-2.0). The archives are published on the same server as the Vexaro software, without an account:
| Component | Source archive |
|---|---|
FFmpeg n8.1.2 build vexaro2 (Vexaro Desk 0.2.20-beta.3 and later): FFmpeg source, the nv-codec-headers, AMF and libvpl source trees, the build scripts and the build record |
https://vexaro.cloud/oss/ffmpeg-n8.1.2-vexaro2-src.tar.xz |
FFmpeg n8.1.2 build vexaro1 (Vexaro Desk 0.2.13 to 0.2.20-beta.2): the same parts for that build |
https://vexaro.cloud/oss/ffmpeg-n8.1.2-vexaro1-src.tar.xz |
env-libvpx-sys 5.1.3 as modified by Vexaro (vexaro1) |
https://vexaro.cloud/oss/env-libvpx-sys-5.1.3-vexaro1-src.tar.xz |
Each archive has a SHA-256 checksum file next to it, at the same address with .sha256 appended, so you can verify the download. An archive is published together with the first release that contains the corresponding build and remains available for at least three years after we last distribute that build. A later build that changes either component is listed here with its own archive.
The other Rust libraries under MPL-2.0 that the notices list (for example option-ext) are included without modification. Their source code is published by their authors on crates.io, the Rust package registry, at the version named in the notices, and it is also covered by the written offer in Section 5.
3.4 Microsoft components
The Vexaro Desk for Windows installer places the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime libraries next to its programs. Vexaro Desk runs on the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime: the installer obtains it from Microsoft when it is missing, and the portable version uses the copy already present in Windows. These are Microsoft software provided under Microsoft’s licence terms. They are not open-source components, §7.6 of the Terms of Service does not apply to them, and they remain subject to §7.2 and §7.3.
4. Earlier versions
Vexaro Desk for Windows versions 0.2.12 and earlier included a third-party FFmpeg build from the BtbN FFmpeg-Builds project that is licensed as a whole under the GNU General Public License, version 3 (GPL-3.0). Version 0.2.13 replaces it with the FFmpeg build described in Section 3.1. The corresponding source code of the earlier FFmpeg build is available under the written offer in Section 5.
5. Written offer
For at least three years after we last distribute a given build of Vexaro software, we will give anyone who asks a complete, machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code of every component in that build whose licence requires it, at no charge, as a download. This includes the FFmpeg builds described in Sections 3.1 and 4 and the modified env-libvpx-sys files. To ask, write to [email protected] and name the product, its version and the component.
